It is projected that this year, the total of Valentine’s Day related sales will reach nearly $19 billion. So, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day consumerism, I welcome you to the pre-release of the 2016 Devium French Creek Vineyard Red.
The 2016 French Creek Red is a blend of 76% Mourvèdre, 21% Syrah and 3% Grenache Blanc. As with the 2015 vintage, all of the varieties were picked together and cofermented. The winemaking followed my minimal intervention ethos: 100% whole cluster, foot crushed, native yeast, no filtration, no new oak, minimal sulfur, and a mostly undisturbed elevage in a cool cellar. The resulting wine is a crystal clear, ruby red, 13.1% alcohol delight.
Years from now, when I look back on this wine, and the 2016 vintage as a whole, I believe that I will look at it as the vintage when Devium found its voice. As much as I love the 2015 Red, the 2016 wines have extra dimensions and are laying down the marker against which all future Devium releases will be judged. There is such a dynamic quality to the 2016. It is elegant and also structured, the fruit is intensely pure, and every sip yields previously hidden complexity. I try not to carry on too much about my own wine, but this is just so damn good, it is hard not to.
The 2016 FC Red Wine is also incredibly limited, I actually have less of the 2016 to sell than I did of the 2015 last year. So please don’t wait too long to place your order. I am going to follow the same pricing and quantity guidelines as I did with the 2016 “Sans Soufre”. Three packs will be $102 ($34/bottle) plus actual shipping cost, 6 packs will be $192 ($32/bottle) plus $20.00 to ship and 12 packs will be $360 ($30/bottle) plus $30.00 for shipping. Of course, you can avoid shipping costs altogether by picking up at Sleight of Hand Cellars in Walla Walla, or at our Seattle (SoDo) location.
